Discriminating between people on the grounds of merit is generally lawful in Western democracies. Discrimination on other grounds, such as skin color or religion, generally is not. When unlawful discrimination takes place, it is often described as discrimination against a person or group of people.
Race discrimination
differentiates between individuals on the basis of real and perceived racial differences. It has been official government policy in several countries one of which is South Africa.
Age discrimination
discrimination against a person or group on the grounds of age. Although theoretically the word can refer to the discrimination against any age group, age discrimination usually comes in one of three forms: discrimination against youth, discrimination against those 40 years old or older ,and discrimination against elderly people.
Gender discrimination
discrimination against a person or group on the grounds of sex or gender identity.
Language discrimination
discrimination due to their preferred language is associated with a particular group, class or category.
Disability discrimination
discrimination brought about by the society's notion that people with disabilities are inferior.
